Artist Statement

I have been sewing since I was a child so beadwork is a natural choice of medium for me. It's a patient art form and a meditative process: choose bead, sew bead. Grow with the tree, bloom with the flower, move with the river. My passion for beads started when I used them to embellish garments. I decided that if I could bead a flower, then I could bead a tree .... or the whole forest. Thus began my "painting with beads". I could not resist those orbs of glass after seeing each color bead as I worked, how the light reflects. It's that shiny thing.

The materials I chose are rich in color, depth and texture... like my subject matter. My favorite textile to bead on is a multi-color felted wool. My stitches can nestle beads into the wool, float them on the surface, pull them closer together. The fabric is lovely in the hand, soft and giving, quite different from cool solid glass of beads. Light plays on and in the glass while the muted tones of wool absorbs the light and form the background. Contrast and compliment, a wonderful combination.
